I only watched the first 40 minutes so far. Not much about Palestine yet, but damn, I didn’t know the right was so explicitly anti-empathy. Like, I knew their entire ideology is based on hate and fear of your fellow man, but it shocks me how many of them literally say “You shouldn’t feel empathy for others” out loud.

Is it really that surprising? I thought it was well known that empathy is wholly antithetical to being a reactionary. The entire ideology is based on the inability and/or unwillingness to understand some else’s circumstances, perspective, culture, etc.

I think for a lot of common people they are repeating things that they’ve heard (as humans do), and as socialists, many of us have seen them do a bit of a stutter or something when they meet a mild challenge and hear what they’re saying out loud. I think that holds true for many people still.

What I think we forget is that the leaders and core components of the propaganda machine actually believe it to the bone, and have no issue saying it out loud.

    Better late than never

Also if you told me 5 years ago that the nice musical Disney adult media criticism lady would end up further to the left of most of “breadtube” on…. Fucking genocide… yeah nah I wouldn’t have believed you yet here we are

Tl/dr for everyone too busy: The 2hr runtime is mostly used to show the link between rightwing Christian white supremacy (and American conservatism in general), antisemitism, and Israeli Zionism and how they fuel each other in exhaustive detail; and why the right attacks education and the concept of empathy as a necessary political component to lay the groundwork for genocide. There is a discussion of the Rwandan genocide as a case study.

I don’t think there’s much information in the video that’ll be new to leftists, although having everything all laid out in one place is pretty nice. If you’re looking for a more Marxist perspective you’ll be disappointed because there’s no mention of the role of Western Imperialism, but otherwise the video’s worst sin is a lot of caveats and hemming and hawing about Hamas and it’s actions on Oct 7th, which I think should be expected even if a little disappointing. (She just skirts the entire issue of Israel’s right to exist by… not addressing it.)

Send this to all the liberals in your life you haven’t/can’t ostracise for moral cowardice yet, in a last ditch attempt to appeal to their humanity.

I kinda am, too. That’s why I’m reading these comments before watching. Old breadtube hasn’t exactly been great on this issue, except Shaun. But the fact that she’s made a video at all kind of impresses me. So far, it sounds like it will be okay?

Wait, Lindsay Ellis is still making videos? I thought she quit Youtube.

    checks Youtube account

Why does she have a 2+ hour video about whether Yoko Ono broke up with the Beatles? It’s pretty common knowledge that she didn’t. Not sure why we need to rehash late 60s/early 70s celebrity drama half a century later.

Some of the Jewish people I know acknowledge that that state has made the world more dangerous for Jewish people. The others are zionists. I know we live in a zionist society, but it’s still wild seeing people buy into it. We’re not going to get that liberation for everyone until we’ve reached that critical mass that think that the entity shouldn’t exist. I think we’re getting closer to that, but we’ve got a ways to go.

(I have not watched this video) Basically every Jewish person I know is of the opinion that antisemitism has gotten worse since October 7th, usually for the reasons often discussed on Hexbear that all Jewish people are getting chained to isntrael by the media.

All Jewish people are getting chained to Israel by Israel. They constantly refer to themselves as “the Jews” and clearly see themselves as representative of Jews everywhere. Media elsewhere is all too happy to play along with that narrative of course.

Maybe I’ll watch more of the video, but I don’t believe Mrs. Ellis is placing any emphasis on that aspect, which is why I think she needs to take some more time on it to discuss it thoroughly, or stay focused on the genocide and discuss antisemitism another day.

Got nothing against Lindsay, glad she’s back from behind a paywall, I dont know what she’s gonna talk about for 2 hours regarding this subject. Just like…make a video about how Emperor’s New Groove normalizes non Toxic Male Friendship but also Monarchy or whatever.
