I’ll never understand why an E-ink touch screen system is almost $1k. Apple is making money on a tablet with WAY more capabilities for far less money.

That looks incredibly expensive for what it is. You’re just paying for the name.

It’s in the same ballpark as its competitors, not that far off, especially compared to Montblanc’s typical pricing. It’s pricey, but you’d think it would be worse with their name.

What I’m more curious about is what kind of screen it is using, and how good the software is.

It’s not in the ballpark of its competitors. Other tablets like this are in the $500-$700 range. The only one in this price point I can think of is the Boox Tab XC, which has:

        • Color
        • Android
        • Frontlight
        • More storage
        • Still, a lower price

It’s more than twice the price of the Boox Go 10.3, which looks to be the most comparable tablet, and several hundred more than the reMarkable 2 (bundled with the folio case), which is already marketed as a premium device with a premium price tag.

not that far off, especially compared to Montblanc’s typical pricing.

Like if you wanna ignore that part, sure. This company sells $500 ballpoint pens, their watches are $3k and up. Last I looked they have a fancy pen that comes with the tablet. This is all very on brand for them, so like I said it’s surprising it doesn’t cost more. So yes I’d say similar ballpark to competitors, it ain’t like this is $3k or something, it’s under a grand, like all E Ink note taking tablets.

And this isn’t even the first company to come up with selling a fancy pen for an E Ink note-taking device. Supernote has been selling fancy stylus pens for years now, including Lammy. All Montblanc is doing here is riding their coattails with their own branding.

This isn’t a fashion accessory that will last decades like a pen is. It’s a tech device that will be obsolete in a year or two and dead in five years. Even Apple, the pinnacle of overpriced fashion tech, doesn’t gouge this hard. Their tablets are like 20-30% above equivalent Android tablets at the high end.

Saying that, “well they overprice all of their products, so entering a new market that is extremely price competitive with wildly overpriced products is totally justifiable,” is just crazy to me.

The fact is this is a mediocre product with a 100% higher price than similar mediocre products. I would strongly advise you not waste your money on this.

If you can’t afford it, it isn’t for you, basically. It literally is a fashion accessory with a leather bed for the fancy pen, precisely what Montblanc is known for, and you’re arguing about a couple hundred bucks difference. Die on that hill if you like, but it’s telling how you’re convinced of its quality having never used it and zero reviews available.

Personally I think it’s compelling, somewhat, and am curious how it was designed and what parts are used. I won’t buy one, but there is clearly a place in the market, as Supernote has proven.

By the by, you ever wonder why nobody bothers posting to Lemmy? I sure don’t, pedantic semantics looks to be the main sport here, but hey why discuss the subject of this sub when the main feed can be filled with the inane questions of the lazy instead, amirite ;)

I called it mediocre because I read its specs, and they’re mediocre. 64GB internal storage, no Android (instead it has to sync with an Android or iOS app on your phone), grayscale screen, no frontlight, doesn’t come with a folio cover (sold separately for only $200!).

Those are the specs of a $400 tablet.

The pen looks pretty good though. I wouldn’t spend $275 on it, but I could definitely see that being worth it because of the fashion aspect to someone who wants to show off.

I know it’s a fashion accessory, I said it’s not a fashion accessory that will last decades like a pen. It has a non-user replaceable battery that will be dead in five years with regular use. Maybe 8 if you only charge to 80%. I have no problem spending crazy money on something fashionable if it will last a long time. I have a drawer full of fancy fountain pens that will still work great in 2060. (In fact, two of my pens are over sixty years old and still work great.)

I feel like you’re taking my comments personally, which isn’t my intention. My problem is with Montblanc’s pricing, not you. There’s no reason to use personal attacks and insults, and there’s certainly no reason to hastily generalize the entire Lemmy community.
