I feel the need to ask about the choice of “loud” as the adjective here. Are the tags actually making audible noise, or is this just a non-standard usage of it an a synonym for “overwhelming”?

I wouldn’t say it’s all that “nonstandard.” The word “loud” is often used to mean distracting or attention-grabbing in a visual context, so extending it to other senses doesn’t seem like that far of a leap.

It’s probably not relevant, but on the subject of fabrics: have you guys ever noticed how velvet and its ilk make it literally impossible to breathe?

Wow, this is something I’ve noticed for my whole life but never talked about or anything, just assumed it was some odd quirk of mine. But yes, I have a specific recollection of touching some kind of paper that had like a velour side to it, and just catching my breath for some reason, and it’s happened a handful of times in the last 30+ years since then.

I am unaware of the effects of Tylenol.
What does it do about shirt tags? How does someone else “sucking up” (what does that mean?) a headache have to do with another’s shirt tags and sensory issues?

It’s the polyester, imo. A lot of natural fibers get fuzzier as they wear, but the plastic fiber tags will polish to a sharp edge.

I don’t think anyone likes them, but maybe autistic people are more likely to absolutely detest them. I know my partner certainly does; she cuts them out of every shirt she wears… Including some of mine, unfortunately.

I do not think that if you are irritated by tags it necessarily means that you are autistic. I get irritated by tags and I have been tested for autism and I am not autistic. I am not completely neurotypical in other ways though.

Looking through the comments highlights once again that neurotypicals continue to invalidate neurodivergent experiences because they do no understand the experience. Part of it is certainly due to the language we continue to use, as it doesnt explain the full extent of the experience. But another is just neurotypical people refusing to understand the struggles of neurodivergent people.

In relation to specifically this meme, yes most people do not like tags. Most people find them irritable and uncomfortable. The difference is autistic people are more senstive to sensory things, to the point something like a tag itching at your neck becomes an excrutiating and unmanageable experience.

If you can go a whole day wearing a shirt with a tag in it with no major issues, you are probably not autistic. If when you wear a shirt with a tag it is a unbearable sensation, something you cant ignore and stresses you out to the point you cant go a full day wearing it and still function as a humanbeing, you are probably autistic.

For future reference for neurotypical people, stop assuming you know what being neurodivergent is. For those people trying to find the fakers, stop. You arent a doctor, just like how that person you are trying to accuse of self diagnosing for attention is also not a doctor. You genuinely do not know what you are talking about and are genuinely no better than all the transphobic chuds that “transvestigate” people. At best you called out a shitty person trying to earn internet points (someone who will not think twice about your comment), and at worse you are invalidating someone’s personal lived experience (something that can seriously affect their mental health).

If someone is talking about their experience as a neurodivergent person and you think “Hey I do that,” there are two more likely possibilities than that they are faking. Either 1. You are autistic and don’t know it. Or 2. You are not understanding the full extent of what they are talking about.

This is why the downvotes. Not all neurodivergent people are autistic, and not autistic people have this specific sensory problem. For example, my partner doesn’t have a problem with tags, but that doesn’t override his ADHD diagnosis and make him neurotypical.

I find it weird to be attacking neurotypicals for not understanding neurodivergents and then saying this stuff about tags, which is almost universally irritating. It really does take a kind of person not to have that bother them.

Also, who is invalidating experiences? I either couldn’t find them or I’m blind to it. If anything, people are saying not to self-diagnose, and others are agreeing that neurodivergents may find that more irritating than usual.

I’m sorry for the negative responses you’re getting on this. You have a point and in my opinion your comment comes across as being frustrated yet still respectful. You’re not attacking anyone, you’re expressing an annoyance you have on a forum in a thread that’s on topic. It’s exactly the right place for you to say this. I’m so shocked at the response you’re getting on this! It doesn’t make any sense to me.

I just want to say I spent almost 45 minutes to attempt to respond to this and ended up just deleting it.

I’m sure it’s tough to be neurodivergent, and there are plenty neurotypical folks who would like to understand and make your life easier. I would also like to understand and support other minority positions, and every one is an investment of time and effort.

Less absolutist in laying out the argument. He comes off as ‘once again I’m proven right’ which isn’t a great way to get a point across.

I get the frustration, certainly, but it just shuts down discussion rather than fostering it
