This may actually be the root of fascism. All that self-hatred gets externalized and has to go somewhere. Then wham, you have neo-nazis. And who do they attack? The projected vessel of the thing that causes their self-hatred, as some mental gymnastic form of repentance. “I can’t be gay if I denounce and beat the gays! Surely I won’t go to hell!”

The root of fascism is innate human tribal instincts cranked to eleven. The underlying ingroup loyalty, that core conservatism, is how people think by default. Reasoned argument is a learned behavior. We’re bad at teaching it. As a result, reality is a team sport, to some people. They can form argument-shaped sentences, but they’re just shuffling cards.
Getting people from wishy-washy interpersonal loyalty to death-or-glory hierarchy worship does take emotionally intense manipulation - but it’s a mistake to think self-hatred is necessary, or even prevalent. Most people seem pretty okay with themselves but will gladly hate you. The violent fervor that completely divorces people from understanding that words mean things can come from simply tugging at their comforts and blaming it on some recognizable tenth of the population.
It makes a tonne of sense that reactionaries would be particularly into trans women and femboys, as they already think cis-women are inferior and only for breeding and domestic servitude (which conversely makes cis-women more wary of them), and above all they absolutely love proscribing more and more of normal human experience so they can turn everything into kinks for themselves.
