  • Yeah huge numbers of the worst off workers already don’t get shit for holidays and have to deal with everyone else’s privilege on those days. The rational part of my brain doesn’t want any working person to lose that benefit but part of me really couldn’t give a shit. Especially so because any time I say “maybe everything should be closed on holidays, not just your job” to a white collar worker they act like I said we should ritually sacrifice their dog.

  • This is a threat to Iran but more importantly it’s a threat to the US. Israel cannot sustain a prolonged conventional war with Iran. I’m not sure they could even win it if it went nuclear but I don’t know enough about their arsenal or what the political reaction would be to say that. Only with direct US intervention could they win. The US doesn’t want to get involved though because the US military is also not really capable of winning without sustaining casualties it doesn’t want to.

In the long term, Israel nuking Iran would likely be much worse for the US than direct US intervention though. Firstly Iran would respond by destroying all of the oil infrastructure in West-aligned countries, significantly harming the global economy. Secondly the US Dollar would totally lose its supremacy in international politics to the nuclear umbrella. Thirdly Pakistan might start flinging nukes too and who knows how India, China, and Russia will respond to that.

Right now the US isn’t figuring out how to attack Iran. They’ve been doing that for decades. They’re trying to guess whether they should cave to Israel’s threat or not.

  • It varies a little bit between munitions but usually police are only supposed to aim at limbs with them from more than a few meters away. They’re intended to be shot at people’s extremeties to force them to drop a weapon so that they can be subdued (and provided with neccessary medical care shortly after) without hurting themselves or someone else. For instance if someone is threatening officers with a knife, police could shoot them in the arm, likely breaking the bone, and forcing the person to drop the knife.

Getting hit in the head or center mass with them often leads to life threatening injuries because they break bones (like the skull or ribs), cause internal bleeding, and bruise or rupture organs. If they’re being used for crowd control they should only be getting shot at legs or feet from a substantial distance and even that is extreme.

  • Wdym the “real history” takes place after 1893? Half a million workers, nearly ten percent of the US population at the time, went on strike in 1886 demanding the eight hour workday. Some estimates say the Knights of Labor alone counted 20% of blue collar workers as their members. The late nineteenth century labor movement is only rivaled by the peak of the twentieth century labor movement. There’s a substantial history of industrial struggle and worker organizing dating back centuries in the US. It’s not as well documented or state sanctioned as twentieth century union activity, but it most certainly happened.

If you wanted to write an interesting paper, exploring why people think labor history started in the twentieth century and the effects of that would be interesting but maybe too broad. There are plenty of individual events, people, struggles, and perspectives in pre-1893 labor history you could focus on though.

  • Israel and Iran have traded blows once or twice a year for the past few years now. It is worrying how it seems to be escalating year over year but imo it won’t evolve into a full scale conflict this time. Iran is desperately toeing a fine line between looking weak demanding diplomacy and responding with a commensurate military action but they genuinely do not want an all out war with Israel.

For the Israelis these regular attacks are partly to destabilize Iran but primarily to shore up support at home.

It would not surprise me if the Trump regime actually played a role in making this happen to distract from what’s going on here in the states but maybe I’m giving them too much credit.
