I would just add a regular donate function that takes crypto, Paypal, etc but adds a small fee configurable by the instance owner on top.

Technology@lemmy.world•HP and Dell disable HEVC support built into their laptops’ CPUsEnglish
1·11 hours agoMake sure to use “disable phase inversion” for Opus if you want good quality in mono. I’m suprised this isn’t set by default.
Register with an Outlook or Tuta you use only for Lemmy.
Reddit also does shadowbans for suspected spam users, meaning you could be banned on sign up without realising, so do the same there.

5·3 days agoI think the best choice is to get a non-gaming Windows laptop and install Linux on it.
If you don’t need something super powerful then get a refurbished Thinkpad T14 or Elitebook 840 G7 from eBay or Amazon.
Or if you need more CPU, a better screen, etc get a new Omnibook (7 or above) or Ideapad (5 or above) for a Macbook like feel or a Thinkpad for repairability.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How do I roll a new windows 11 laptop back into 10?
1·3 days agoYou can turn the telemetry and Recall off in the Windows settings. The privacy & security tab has everything.
Copilot can be uninstalled with Revo uninstaller like everything else.

Technology@lemmy.world•What are some of the most upgradable laptops in the past ~5 years?English
7·5 days agoThinkpads are what you want to look for. You can get a refurbished one from eBay or Amazon Renewed for $300 and they almost all have upgradable storage and RAM, as well as having the rest of the parts being easier to replace than a consumer laptop.
The T14 series is the one to look at.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How do I roll a new windows 11 laptop back into 10?
2·6 days agoYou can remove it. There is actually an “IoT Enterprise LTSC” edition that is fresh from the start, though it may not support the very latest hardware so install 11 Pro then use Revo uninstaller’s Windows apps tab to remove the junk.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How do I roll a new windows 11 laptop back into 10?
1·6 days agoI wouldn’t recommend it. Just install ExplorerPatcher to get the old UI back.
The amount of telemetry is essentially the same and most of it can be turned off in the settings.
Go to your Google account settings and make sure that web & app activity, location history and ad personalisation are turned off.
Then uninstall/disable the Google apps you won’t need then replace them with alternatives from F-droid (add the Izzyondroid repo too) like Cromite (in FFUpdater), Comaps, Thunderbird and QUIK SMS.
You should also follow standard practices like setting a non-easy to guess PIN code and also installing security updates.
You can get background play in the actual YouTube app with Revanced if you want a mobile UI.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Most, if not all car companies collect and profile your data, how can I improve my privacy when buying a modern car?
45·6 days agoJust don’t connect it to the internet. The radio and Bluetooth do not need an internet connection to work and you can use your phone for maps and music streaming.

4·7 days agoOnn/Thompson sticks. They also use the stick form factor but they run Google TV so they shouldn’t be affected.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Handled a ThinkPad today. What distro should I go with? Ubuntu? Arch?
8·7 days agoIf you’re using this laptop to do work, then Mint or Zorin can’t be beat. They have user-friendly interfaces, they have stable packages meaning updates are unlikely to break your OS, and you can still install new software through Flatpak and Snap.
Once installed, install Librewolf for web browsing, VLC for video playback, OnlyOffice for MS Office files, and any other software you need from the built-in software store. If you choose Mint then you need to turn on unverified Flatpaks in the software store for everything to appear.
Also, with the original 1 x 4 GB of RAM and mechanical hard drive, this laptop will be slow with a modern OS, so I recommend upgrading it to 8 GB RAM (2 x 4 GB is recommended for dual channel speed) and an SSD beforehand.
It’s a show that predicted the influence the internet would have on people, and the influence that cults already had on people. Almost everything you see is a metaphor for something.
For example, the fact there are multiple Lains in the Wired is a metaphor for how everyone has a different view of you, and rumours and fake news can make those views entirely wrong.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What are the options if my country makes VPN's illegal?
4·10 days agoUse a VPN with a circumvention protocol like Stunnel. Windscribe has a ‘stealth’ mode using it.

Reddit@lemmy.world•Reddit's Ban Evasion Detection Is Fucking Orwellian
3·10 days agoIf you have to go back for the user base, use a fresh Firefox profile with no extensions except uBlock Origin and Jshelter then combine that with a mobile hotspot without a VPN.
Also, when you create an account, do not use the sign up button in the top right. Instead click a random Reddit thread on Google, then click reply on a random comment and then create the account.
DO NOT use your main email (including Gmail’s +1 or exam.ple variants) or phone number.
It’s pretty new
Almost all TVs come with a power saving or eco mode enabled by default which ruins visibility. Find that in the settings and turn it off. You should also turn off motion interpolation (e.g Trumotion, Clear Motion Plus, Motionflow) so motion doesn’t become a smeary and artificial mess.
You can usually fix it by turning off power saving/eco mode and setting the gamma to 2.2 on your TV. You should also turn off motion smoothing (Trumotion/Auto Motion Plus/Motionflow/Clear Motion) so motion doesn’t look overly smooth and fake.
Maybe try the Apple one when Android 16 comes out (in GrapheneOS form) which fixes the volume issues.

But to stop it from becoming like YouTube with clickbait everywhere, you would need limits on how much can be given and received.
