Their Flight Landed in Africa2·2 days agoCentral Africa has good prospects: a young and energetic population, an increasingly educated population, economic growth. They look like North America at the beginning of the 20th Century. Some will win and some will lose but they have what it takes to take the lead

HenriVolney@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Europeans, how far do you walk for groceries?7·3 days agoNearest grocery store is 100m away. Nearest supermarket is 850m (just cheched). I walked to the supermarket moments ago, bought grocery and brought it back all in less than 1 hour. I wouldn’t do it with 30 degrees in the middle of the day though. If there were no sidewalks and I had to make a 6km round trip to get groceries, I would invest in the cheapest electric bike possible.

Also, no undrstanding of the the impact of the constant and violent demands from some Muslim French citizens that schools, hospitals and administrations accommodate their beliefs, like changing school curricula or demanding that only female doctors treat women. Since 1905, no church, religious congregation or faith-based community have had any say into public affairs. People who want to change that are hitting the bedrock of the French republic. Anglo-American columnists keep spreading the narrative of a fundamentally islamophobic France and they keep missing the point. Yes there is widespread racism in France, particularly against Arabs and, to some extent, against Muslims. This racism is rooted in bigotry and xenophobia. The fight between the French republic and Islam fundamentalism is another relam altogether. Pretending that the two issues overlap is only serving racists.
This looks like the new New world. In comparison, the US seems as old-school as Europe one century ago…
