A DJ hitting play on a track they didn’t create seems analogous to someone sending a prompt to an AI.

If deciding what music to play given the response to a previous track is art then choosing what prompt to add to a given AI response is also art.

I am drawing strong parallels between an existing, recognised form of art and this new artistic tool. It is exactly how a point of debate is defended.

You don’t claim creation of the pieces. Collage is “an assembly of different forms, thus creating a new whole” … “When collage uses existing works, the result is what some copyright scholars call a derivative work.”

I’m not calling out deadmau5 or vinyl DJs. I said any DJ that has a synced light show is just pushing a button and dancing. The video I linked to explains why.

If festival DJs that just push a button to play other people’s music get called artists then why not AI creators. It’s the same amount of skill and effort.

Oh yes. From the artists perspective a piece is rarely finished. There always seems more to add or change. I very much respect artists who can create minimal pieces that still seem finished.

Using AI within these iterations does not seem to be cheating to me, but many people in this thread seem to disagree.

But from a viewer perspective they can only imagine the work that has gone into a piece. The end result is usually all they have.

Art history is very interesting, but let’s not kid ourselves. The tourists are packed into a small part of the Louvre only for the finished product.
