  • One of the few benefits of Reform if they do get in is they do support PR. Whether that support will dissolve the second they win under FPTP remains to be seen.

Nope. They definitely will not move to a proportional representation system. Why the hell would they?

Proportional representation benefits them when they are not in power because it’s the only way they can get into power, if they somehow manage to find a way into power under first past the post then introducing proportional representation would only dilute their power.

In any scenario in which they have power they are unlikely to introduce proportional representation, and in any scenario where they support proportional representation, they won’t have enough power to actually implement it.

Like most things with Reform, it’s all bark and no trousers.

  • The US actually has other parties, it’s just no one ever hears about them. I’m afraid to say that this will go the same way, the days of the three-party system are long since over. Now your choice is right-wing politicians, really right-wing politicians, or actual Nazis.

Or you can have the delusional hippies (who don’t want to build solar farms on the basis that it would require cutting down a few trees), who always pick up a few votes, but never enough to make any difference.

The only good thing about reform is that Nigel Farage has utterly failed to establish the cult following that Donald Trump has. So they’re unlikely to be a long-term issue.

  • Federation is an overly complicated solution it’s not required. It also wouldn’t actually help, they can still take it off the app store there’d be another one but they would just play whack-a-mole and you can achieve the same thing with open source.

The best bet would be to have the database hosted outside the US and just have apps that pull the data from an API. There’s no need for the app itself to store the data in fact that’s a really stupid way to do it. You could federate it if you wanted but honestly that’s probably unnecessary

  • So it’s just an amp version of the gov.uk website? I assume so because after reading the article I’m no clearer on what the point of this app is actually supposed to be. Apparently I can customise it, a feature that I’ve got to be honest I’ve never felt was missing from the website.

I actually think the gov.uk website is really quite good. Certainly a lot easier than it used to be with all of the services and departments having their own website, I’ve never really felt an app is necessary.
