The straw is a metaphor for doing what you can in your own world no matter how small, not the absolute culmination of all the good that we’ve done.

Australia@aussie.zone•About 3m Australians affected by unlawful Centrelink debt calculation to be eligible for up to $600 compensationEnglish
3·2 months agoI think their point is that it’s not that Centrelink is designed around the assumption that people are welfare cheats but rather it’s designed to discourage everyone as a cost saving measure.

Australian Politics@aussie.zone•Should Australia lower the voting age to 16 like the UK? We asked 5 experts
2·3 months agoA 16 or 17 year-old earning 90$/day shouldn’t pay ANY tax IMHO. As a teenager I and my classmates weren’t using roads, the hospital system, the courts, or most of the facilities that public funds go towards anywhere near the extent that we use them as adults. I hope I can pay it all forward when I get a full time gig given how much public money I’ve been directly involved in spending.
Edit: I will add that even if your child isn’t in a romantic or sexual relationship, they can still learn from meaningful relationships with their friends and from their relationship with their parents. Provided they have good friends (and parents, no pressure) they’ll turn out ok, and they’ll learn that there are worse things than being single.

Bicycles@lemmy.ca•New York City has sent over 6000 cyclists to criminal court. Some say they are being treated unfairly.
73·3 months agoThe Idaho Stop is not the same as running a red. I’ve been riding all my life and riding on the road since I was 12. You shouldn’t run red lights; it’s unpredictable and just downright dangerous if you do it at the wrong intersection.
Reddit was malmanaged by a money-hungry C-suite and investors. Blaming the downfall of reddit solely on the users is naive.

Overseas News@aussie.zone•Australian's criminal history went viral after annoying the wrong repair guy
111·3 months agoI’m glad I’m not the only one who finds his personality annoying in some way I can’t quite put my finger on. I suspect it’s just the culture clash between my quiet Australian upbringing and his bold and brash New York personality. I also strongly agree with you that he fights the good fight and he fights it well.

Australia@aussie.zone•Driving rules for elderly under scrutiny after Wantirna South crash kills woman, leaves man fighting for lifeEnglish

jagungal@aussie.zonetoAsk An Australian@aussie.zone•How do I know if my roof leak needs urgent repair?
2·4 months agoTell me about it. I’ve fixed my fair share of leaky roofs and sometimes you just make an educated guess and hope. I hate getting up into the ceiling but sometimes it’s the only way to trace the water from the end point to the source. With tiled roofs however, it can be nice and obvious with something like a cracked tile or a tile that’s shifted out of place.
jagungal@aussie.zonetoAsk An Australian@aussie.zone•How do I know if my roof leak needs urgent repair?
6·4 months agoTiled roofs can be easy to fix especially if you have spare tiles, but you can also do repairs with silicone and/or flashtac. You’ll find that the two main difficulties are accessing the roof and finding the source of the leak. If you’re handy and willing to take on the (not insignificant) risk of getting on your roof you could consider doing it yourself, but otherwise you should get a professional to have a look at it.
😆 Western Australians wish Perth was the capital. At least you know your Australian cities

Do you know what a metaphor is?
