Shifty EyestoHacker News@lemmy.bestiver.se•Google will allow users to sideload Android apps without verificationEnglish
26·11 days agoInstall not sideload.
We heard from developers who were concerned about the barrier to entry when building apps intended only for a small group, like family or friends. We are using your input to shape a dedicated account type for students and hobbyists. This will allow you to distribute your creations to a limited number of devices without going through the full verification requirements.
we are building a new advanced flow that allows experienced users to accept the risks of installing software that isn’t verified.
Today, we’re excited to start inviting developers to the early access for developer verification in Android Developer Console for developers that distribute exclusively outside of Play.
Does this mean F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid, Guardian Project, etc, are safe for now? The messaging is unclear.
What about other android based OS like Graphene, etc? Will they be affected?
Thanks for the info and details. I’m hoping its real but maybe its best to wait till the 2nd round of production or something, let the journalists and tech reviewers be the guinea pigs for the next crowdfunding.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Never buying milk from Walmart againEnglish
292·25 days agosome whole milk has cream that settles at the top. Are you sure it was actually bad?
Edit: looks like you’re not the only one with issues with this brand. If you keep the container you can get a refund from the manufacturer or walmart.
GrapheneOS for now until Liberux NEXX becomes a thing or whatever linux phone with good enough security, privacy, and hardware. I’m most hopeful for liberux due to the hardware and the desktop mode so you can use it like a PC.

World News@lemmy.world•Hardliner conservative Sanae Takaichi becomes Japan’s first female leaderEnglish
22·1 month agoShe has openly aspired to be like Margaret Thatcher, the first woman to become British prime minister – known as the “Iron Lady,” a nickname that has since been used for Takaichi herself.
That being said, if you go back 100 years, Japan has only had 7 or so prime ministers that lasted 3 or more years. Most last 1-2 years or less. I’m not sure how much she can change, but its worth watching what new coalitions form with the LDP and also the rise of Sanseito (MAGA inspired Japanese-First party) in future elections.

Exacta. I stopped bothering with ironing or separating whites from colors a decade ago. It doesn’t get bought if it picks up stains from other clothes, bleeds color to other clothes, or gets wrinkled even if I hang dry or hang it up hot from the dryer.
Only exception is merino wool sweaters (lay flat to dry) and a few dress clothes (dry clean only).

7·2 months agoCynical view: neoliberals are in bed with republicans, gotta follow the money and lobbyists.
A kinder take: The dems definitely have a messaging problem.
Bernie and AOC will tell it to you straight.

17·2 months agoBusiness climate would be better under Vance, at least he won’t throw tariff tantrums and we know what to expect. Companies might actually start hiring again. Trump is so volatile that companies are hesitant to do anything right now, its just low hire, low fire wait it out for the next 3 years.
Edit: I would be surprised if Trump gets removed under the 25th amendment or impeached. The rules state the VP and majority of the cabinet would need to declare him unfit, then President could challenge, then you need a super-majority of two-thirds votes in both houses for it to stand. Very unlikely sequence of events. Unless something drastically changes in the midterm elections, I think its more likely for Trump to stay on as a puppet if he really has dementia or mental decline.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•I landed in another toxic workplace after quitting a previous one. What would you do in this scenario? (Open to all suggestions)English
12·2 months agoOP you are now a grey rock until you can get out. Good luck, if you have great worker protections as an EU worker, even better, just do your job, keep your head down. You can choose how you respond mentally and how it affects you. Don’t try to control what you can’t control. Take up mindfulness and meditation and a side of therapy if you need to while you work on getting a better job in the EU.

If the Liberux NEXX actually launches, that’ll be my next phone (
or maybe the Furi FLX1sedit: FLX1s doesn’t have headphone jack, so the NEXX is the only phone in development that I would buy in the future). Otherwise its GrapheneOS until there’s a linux phone with the right combination of new hardware and decent OS that I’m looking for.

World News@lemmy.world•China Is Leading the World in the Clean Energy Transition. Here's What That Looks LikeEnglish
2·2 months agoThey’re at a turning point, and coal is on a downward trend as a % of their total energy usage, even if energy produced by coal increased.

I just manually search tenor.com or whatever gif site and send a link or download and send as an attachment. Annoying extra step but I’m using futo due to privacy/degoogle, so I don’t mind the extra work.

3·2 months agoIt took me about 6 weeks to ease into barefoot shoes and build up the muscles in my feet, switching between my old New Balance shoes and slowly using the barefoot shoes more and more each day. For anyone looking to get into barefoot shoes, there are also insoles like Bridge Soles and other brands that are supposed to help you ease into it.

Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•Barefoot shoes are the best for hiking.English
4·2 months agoAgreed. You’ll end up miserable if you’re wearing low cut shoes with no gaiters in sandy/gravelly terrain. Won’t be much fun getting pebbles and sand in your shoes every few steps with a full pack.
