Misery loves company, and making the population insecure such that they need to fragment into insular groups, creates an environment where conservatism and faith can spread, while the intellectual gains we’ve made throughout the information age are placed behind gates and degrade outside the walls. Trumpers were sold a path toward personal control, but it was clearly a bamboozle that affects us all, themselves being some of the hardest hit. We’ll all suffer for the slide toward conservatism and ignorance, and the hierarchy will prosper for a little while longer.

We are in quite a pickle. Jumping on the pendulum, breaking out the pitchforks, and stringing up the other side would only further advance the very conditions that weaken the collective. We lose if we take the bait. We lose if we don’t. Our best chance of success lies in resisting the push toward insularity and distributing quality information to all, against the torrent of propaganda from state-influenced media. Now, how the hell do we effectively distribute countervailing information to the population that needs it most (those drawn to faith-based argumentation)?

Another good example of low quality information streams culminating in an explosive brand of dissonance. I expect more chaos of this sort, as we deepen the idiocracy, and people go mad trying to reconcile their ideologies with reality.

I do see the logic in those atop the hierarchy pushing faith-based ideologies ahead of climate calamity. Should Project 2025 continue apace, I’m very curious to see how the various denominations respond to rapid environmental change. I expect a lot of them to lose it like this guy and fight it out. On the other hand, I could also see “faith” providing the blinders needed for a larger population to persist a bit longer. The faithful are also more likely to sacrifice themselves, so it could be an effective population control lever to pull at some point, i.e. Snow Crash.

Sounds rational to me. I’ve also observed many who purport to “care so much”, but it’s really a veil to dodge accountability or otherwise manipulate or pull various social levers. I steer clear of those that are quick to play social games, including shame, to gain status or get their way.

I’ll take rational, well-reasoned, and balanced empathy over manic, performative forms of “care” any day of the week. i.e.: It’s nowhere near a simple binary, those that care and those that don’t. Deceitful opportunists infect all demographics.

I’ve used them for a few years now using my domain. It’s no nonsense and well structured. Eventually, I’ll just self-host, but this is a good option if you don’t have a reliable means to host or just want to get your feet wet before fully self-hosting. The $20/yr plan has been perfectly adequate for my needs.

The tragedy of it all is that I suspect we’d agree on far more if we bridged the information divide. Yes, even the hateful bigots would eventually see the error of their ways given exposure to the populations they detest so. Every day, we use the very tool that could solve the problem, yet it winds up inflaming our insecurities and having the opposite effect.

And, I’m not going to throw up my hands and deflect with “it’s just human nature.” That’s bullshit. We are constantly changing. Our nature and the influences that formed its current state can also change. Sadly, low information ideology and predatory bad actors, have proven to be a formidable clot.

That sucks, but we gotta do what we gotta do. I don’t begrudge anyone for adapting to the environments society has established. Sticking to ideals is a rarity when things are structured to push us toward consumptive lifestyles. So, I’d not feel like a jerk; heck, just having a modicum of awareness is a step in the right direction.

The way to go IMO. I’m on a 20-year streak in not having a car. When I pick a new place to live, walkability to a good grocery store is one of my primary considerations. I only shop for one, so lugging groceries is no big deal, and I enjoy the extra exercise.

Throughout my life I’ve watched people spend all their money on conveniences and degrade physically, mentally, and financially as a result. Why not situate yourself for long-term success from the get-go? I wish more people were conscientious of the energy balance required to sustain a healthy life and best aligns with the environmental impacts we’ve wrought upon ourselves.

Many years ago, I scooped up my lifetime plex sub for I believe $100. But, when plex started pushing their own login portal, I grew wary and bitter. I outright deleted my account shortly thereafter. I more or less respect the hustle but not my cup of tea.

It matters if someone manages to hide an exploit in jellyfin’s codebase, or more likely, a popular plugin. I imagine many folk have permissive outgoing firewall rules, in which case, an exploit could establish connectivity. Whether that eventually leads to privilege escalation on the jellyfin host would depend upon other variables.

edit: I should add that I’ve not used jellyfin and am unfamiliar with how plugins are implemented. I don’t want to speak out of turn, only to suggest, in the abstract, that just because software isn’t exposed to the net, doesn’t mean it cannot harbor exploits that could become problematic. And, plugins are a common vector.

Speaking of calculators on android, I recently found an old silver link cable on ebay, which connects TI calculators to a computer, allowing me to dump the ROM of my old TI89. Loading up that rom in the ‘graph89’ emulator app is an amazing addition to a phone. Blows the socks off any calculator app.

But yes, fossify apps are simple. They do seem to be under active development, so hopefully they shape up nicely in the future.
