I’m not the previous poster, but the French Revolution > Reign of Terror > Napoleonic Era > etc. comes to mind. A cycle of despots one after another.

news@lemmings.world•Greenland American Flag cake served at Kennedy Center event with Republicans pushing for a Trump third termEnglish
5·1 day agoDefinitely an idiot who made that cake, too. Shit looks like 90% fondant and pretty sure the US doesn’t have 18 stripes on its flag.
No soul behind those eyes
She may have single-handedly precipitated the slide into fascism in the US.
If she had simply resigned from her position when she began experiencing health issues, it would have allowed her successor to be nominated and approved under a democratic administration.
Instead, she wanted to retain her position of authority as long as possible, and so her greatest legacy to the US became Amy Coney Barret appointed by Trump and the subsequent series of 5-4 votes in favor of furthering his agenda.

5·2 days agoI thought True Colors was decent enough, but by all accounts Double Exposure was nothing special.
I really liked the anthology thing the series was going with, where every game was telling a different story with a different cast. Maybe eventually getting to the core of answering why these random kids have strange abilities.
But the last thing I wanted was them to try to continue from (what I thought was) a perfect ending. Just seems like they’ve lost the point.
I think it was considered normal for couples to argue pretty much daily.
How many people grew up thinking that marriage is supposed to look like that ? My gawd. People must have been miserable.
Probably likely for a lot of folks. It took so. damn. long. for divorce to be made legal across the western world, and even longer than that to get to the point where the burden of an unhappy marriage was no longer outweighed by the scandal of divorce.
Before no-fault divorces became common, unhappy couples would sometimes even voluntarily fake an affair just to act as “proof” of adultery for a divorce.
This was my experience. There was a local video rental place we used to go to that later sold out to Blockbuster, and everything just got far worse when they did.

23·3 days agoKnew this sort of thing would happen eventually, glad I made the switch away a while back.
When Nova was bought out by Branch, we all knew it couldn’t lead to anything good. But it sucks to switch away, and I know people kept using Nova because they could say “it’s not doing anything sketchy yet.”
With this news, seems safe to say that “yet” is finally “now.” Tim to switch if you haven’t already. I’m happily using Niagara now.
You gotta throw me a bone here Mickey, what am I even looking at?

To be honest, Elden Ring is the only Souls game I’ve played and so it’s the only one of any real interest to me for now, but I am appreciative of the tags used in the post titles that allow me to filter out the content from other games I’m not interested in seeing. Glad to see content is alive somewhere!

Late Stage Capitalism@lemmy.world•How Amnesty International Sides With U.S. Media & Imperialist Interests; Their Latest Take on Iran
2·3 days agoBased on their name, I assume OP’s raison d’etre is only to share articles from this source.
Surely we can believe articles from an outlet with no named authors that is posted only to a glorified op-ed website. I mean, they have “News” in the name, surely it must all be real.
For the more specific example, for any curious, the character Switch from the first movie was originally meant to be trans.
Switch was intended to be biologically male outside of the Matrix but then be female inside the Matrix, based on the way the system represents people by their self-image.
The production studio axed that idea, and the actress who was originally intended to only play 1/2 of the character ended up playing them outside the Matrix as well. The best they could do was keep the name and make Switch look androgynous.

10·4 days agoI think people just miss their niche interest communities.
For example, I love Elden Ring, but !eldenring@lemmy.world hasn’t had any new posts in almost a year. Meanwhile the Elden Ring subreddit has a bunch of posts just from the last few minutes.
Still not enough to make me go back to Reddit, but I admit it’s something I miss and something that just can’t be recreated without more people.
I wanted to build a computer a couple years ago, but the prices they were charging for individual components even then just didn’t make sense compared to buying a more affordable, comparably strong pre-built.
I can’t imagine trying to build one now with these RAM prices, it’s insane.
Did the GPU shortages ever really end, though? We just have more shortages on top of it.

History Memes@piefed.social•Gender and sexual minorities are all throughout history
2·4 days agoYep, it’s wild how long the work of Galen was still considered to be relevant to medicine. If someone needed any work bordering on “surgery” in the 1600’s, they’d likely still be referencing concepts developed in the 3rd century.

History Memes@piefed.social•Gender and sexual minorities are all throughout history
1·4 days agoOh yeah. Sometimes I entertain those sorts of “what if” scenarios where, if I were to be transported back to some arbitrary historical time and place, what could I do with what I have to kickstart social/scientific progress.
But underneath every single one of these thought experiments is the ultimate anxiety of “pray you don’t get a bad cut or eat some bad food, then die painfully and horribly of infection or illness.”
There are just substantially fewer safeguards, so you’re at greater risk of everything. Even thinking about having to go to a hospital at the time of my grandparents’ childhood terrifies me. It’s crazy how much medicine has improved just over the past few decades, and has me wondering just how barbaric our own practices today might seem to others in the future.

Not that Haiti was necessarily at fault for that, though. It was either brace for further conquest, or submit to incredibly harsh terms of peace that would still see the country stripped of all its wealth.
